there is no wagon

I was writing to a friend and got to this about this notion of getting off the wagon.  I don’t really understand where the saying comes from but it seems to me to be just the same as going on and off a diet.  As long as you are on a diet there is a possibility of going off it.  And as long as there is a wagon we can do the same.

Well, truth is, there is no wagon.  Unless of course you are literally getting in and out of a wagon in which case that is a personal decision that should’t really have any bearing on your weight loss.

No wagon.  It’s gone.  No diet.  You don’t do that anymore.  Just you, today and the opportunity to make a few choices that are healthy.  Thats all.  When you choose to eat something that isn’t really great for you, or decide to skip a workout; it’s okay.  Your best today is not the same as it was yesterday.  Even if you go a whole week.  Call it a rest week and move on.  Don’t let a week of unhealthy choices make you throw away everything you’re working towards or lose sight of your goals.  Don’t let a week become a month.

I know it’s hard to keep going.  Exercise isn’t always super fun, sometimes the salmon doesn’t sound as good as the cheese fries and who ever really wants to do a lunge?  But it is in these moments where trudging onward will count the most.  It is in these moments where you are looking desperately around for some wagon to blame things on that your commitment to being healthy and fit will matter.

No one is the picture of a healthy lifestyle 100% of the time.  I’m positive that Jillian Michaels herself has on occasion sat around in her pj’s eating doritos or cheesecake or whatever her vice is.  But I also guarantee you that she doesn’t consider this a complete failure and give up on healthy eating and exercise because of it.

Like most of the suggestions I make the primary change is in your perspective.  Take away the wagon.  All you are left with is the simple daily choices to be conscious of what you put into your body and what you do with it.  And the only day is today.
